| Our journey to have twins was not an easy one. We found out we were having twins at 20 weeks. The sono tech said, "There's the first head and...there is the second." I just looked at my husband then at the woman and said "SECOND HEAD????" A few weeks after I was put on bedrest at home then in the hospital for two months until the girls were born. It was hard on everyone having me in the hospital. My mom took family medical leave to come and stay at the apartment with Randy (my husband) and Drew (then in second grade) On September 7th 2002 the preemie twins Mary-Margaret and Madeline were born. We noticed a few months after they were born that they were not developing as they should so our ped. referred us to Childrens Medical Center in Dallas, TX. We met with a cranio-facial surgeon who diagnosed the girls with plagiocephally and torticollis. We were then referred to Cranial Technologies to make a product called a DOC band that helps reshape their heads as they grow. We could see an improvement in Mary-Margaret almost immediately. Madeline was not growing however so the band cound not really do i'ts job. Her progress moved much slower. They suggested that we contact Easter Seals for the twins physical therapy for the torticollis. When we contacted them they referred us to a program called Early Intervention or "ECI" for short. I am writing this article because I want all the other parents out there with special needs children to know that there are resources out there that can help. Sometimes they are just next to impossible to find. They have to save their resources to help the children and not run "ad campaigns" so you know they exist. Mary-Margaret and Madeline have received services from "ECI" for over a year now. It's an amazing program. The specialists actually come to your home to evaluate the children and to provide services. The twins have received Physial and Developmental Therapy and are about to start speech therapy. I cannot say enough nice things about the program. EVERYONE we have come in contact with has been just wonderful. They have related not only to our twins well but also to us. They have been an invaluable resource. To find an Early Intervention Program in your area visit http://www.nichcy.org/states.htm If you have a hard time finding one, please email me and I will give you the contact information for the ECI here in Dallas. I am sure if you contact them they can help you find service in your area. |
