Getting Rid of Pesky Cradle Cap Naturally

What is cradle cap?

Cradle cap, also known as infantile seborrhoeic dermatitis, is generally a condition affecting the very young and tends to manifest as oily, patchy, or crusty spots anywhere from the scalp to the neck, armpits, eyebrows, bridge of the nose, and diaper area. It is generally caused by an over-active sebaceous gland. The scalp of newborns is most commonly affected, although cradle cap can appear up to three years of age. Cradle cap can appear yellow, greasy, and/or flaky. Many times the flakes can be rubbed off.

How did my baby get cradle cap?

Experts seem to be divided on the exact cause of cradle cap. However, like other skin afflictions of newborns, it is thought to be a direct result of the hormones present in the mother's body during pregnancy and birth. Cradle cap is not the result of allergy or of poor hygiene, despite popular myths to the contrary. It is also more common in cold, dry winter months.

What is the best way to treat cradle cap?

Cradle cap often disappears on it's own accord. Rarely are prescriptions needed to treat the rash, and many natural treatments are very effective. First, avoid harsh baby shampoos. Unfortunately, many shampoos available in the local supermarket or drug stores are very drying and can make the condition worse. Choose a gentle, natural baby shampoo that won't dry baby's tender skin, such as Burt's Bees Baby Bee Shampoo Bar (see http://attachedmamas.com/shop/product_info.php/cPath/28_54/products_id/111). Wash gently, and rinse well. Apply a natural, pure oil created for the treatment of Cradle Cap (we like Herbs for Kids Cradle Cap and Massage Oil (see http://attachedmamas.com/shop/product_info.php/manufacturers_id/17/products_id/126), and comb gently with a wooden fine-toothed comb. Avoid aggressive brushing or combing of baby's hair. Should the scalp become damaged, infection can set in. Remove as much of the crust as possible, then wash again with gentle baby shampoo.

Most of all, be patient. Usually cradle cap clears up on its own fairly quickly. Be sure to check with your baby's health care professional if you have any questions.
